Chumstick Wildfire Stewardship Coalition
Visit our website: www.chumstickcoalition.org
This collaboration continues the strong work of individuals and organizations working on conservation, fuels reduction, and Community Wildfire Protection Plans in the Leavenworth area over the past several years. Led by current elected Coalition Chair, Ross Frank, participants include local landowners and residents, local fire district, industry representatives, County Commissioners, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, The Wilderness Society, Conservation Northwest, and more. The Coalition is fiscally sponsored by the North Central Washington RC&D, and Annie Schmidt serves as the director. We are grateful to be operating under funding from the National Forest Foundation, the Icicle Fund, and donations from participating organizations.

NASA Sensors Watershed Project
What if we could better predict changes to the landscape; changes that affect how we live and how we make a living? It would enable us to better manage our resources and help us plan into the future, especially with increased variability as the norm. Having this valuable predictive capability is the motivation behind the North Central Washington Resource Conservation and Development Council’s (NCW RC&D) collaborative partnership to bring NASA technology to the region.
Bringing the best that science has to offer, applying it to our resource issues and then putting the results into the hands of decision makers, is a powerful tool. The North Olympic Peninsula RC&D, for example, used a $1.6 million NASA grant to develop a hydrologic model to better predict stream flow. The improved water forecasts enabled managers to better allocate water between competing users, and to more aptly initiate emergency responses to drought and flood events. From this successful project, North Central Washington was chosen as one of four RC&D programs, nation-wide, to be awarded support in developing our own decision-support network using NASA technology. We have been given a huge opportunity.
Taking action, in August and October of this year, stakeholders and resource managers from North Central Washington and British Columbia met to define opportunities to use NASA satellite imagery to address resource issues. The binational project is taking shape: six possible data sets have been identified, project components and outcomes outlined, and workgroups initiated. As we continue to work towards a project proposal, we welcome your involvement and really need to hear from you. One of the primary goals of this project is to get science to local decision makers. As a landowner, planner, manager or interested citizen, what resource questions do you need answers to? What sort of information would help facilitate your management decisions? If you would like to be a part of this effort, please contact Samantha Bartling, NCW RC&D Coordinator: Samantha.bartling@wa.usda.gov, 509-422-2750 x 107.
